Who is the Riddler?

In a year of compelling cinematic antagonists, the figure of the “Riddler” has undeniably emerged as a frontrunner. His presence permeates childishly unsettling greeting cards, intricate instruments of death, and chillingly unscripted live feeds. The recurring mantra, “No More Lies,” plastered across these macabre creations, has amplified the dark and terrifying atmosphere of The Batman.

But who is he? Within the film, two separate identifications for the Riddler are glimpsed: “Edward Nashton” and “Patrick Parker,” both names rooted in the character’s comic book history.

In this cinematic iteration, the Riddler’s origin is tied to the very foundations of Gotham’s elite. He is depicted as an orphan who grew up in a facility funded by Bruce Wayne’s own father, Thomas Wayne. However, amidst the institution’s corrupt operations, he was ultimately failed by the system, left to endure a solitary and bleak existence. This formative trauma is presented as the crucible in which his antisocial personality was forged.

Portrayed with unsettling intensity by the acclaimed actor Paul Dano, this character, often concealed behind a mask and glasses, becomes a spectral presence haunting the impenetrable darkness of Gotham City. His actions are characterized by a chilling blend of the bizarre, the brutal, and the terrifying.

The film’s concluding prison interrogation scene stands out as a particularly disturbing illustration of the Riddler’s psyche. As Batman seeks answers, the encounter devolves into a maniacal monologue. The Riddler’s sudden, fervent rendition of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” propels him into a moment of sheer madness. This encapsulates the core of the Riddler’s horror: he commits atrocious acts while genuinely believing he is engaged in a righteous crusade to cleanse Gotham City of its perceived hypocrisy and moral decay.
